Pug

Pugs are brachycephalic (flat-faced) and commonly experience brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). Their shortened airways cause noisy breathing, snoring, exercise intolerance, and heat sensitivity. Severity varies between individuals. Maintaining a healthy weight is critical because excess fat around the neck further restricts breathing. Severe cases may benefit from surgical correction.

Pugs need only 20 to 30 minutes of gentle daily exercise. Short, calm walks and indoor play are ideal. Their brachycephalic anatomy means they overheat quickly and cannot sustain vigorous activity. Avoid exercise in hot, humid, or cold weather. Watch for heavy panting, blue-tinged gums, or collapse, which indicate respiratory distress. Air-conditioned environments are essential in warm climates.

Pugs are excellent with children due to their patient, playful, and sturdy (for a small breed) temperament. They enjoy attention and are tolerant of handling. Their compact size (6 to 8 kg) is manageable for families without being so fragile that normal play poses a risk. They thrive as the center of attention in a busy family household.

Despite their short coat, Pugs are heavy shedders. Their dense double coat releases significant fur year-round. Regular brushing 2 to 3 times per week helps manage shedding, and more frequent brushing during seasonal changes reduces loose hair. Using a rubber grooming mitt is effective for this breed. Pug owners should expect fur on furniture and clothing.

Pugs typically live 13 to 15 years with proper care. Their longevity is good for a small breed but can be compromised by obesity and respiratory issues. Maintaining a lean body condition, providing regular veterinary care, and managing their brachycephalic limitations are the most important factors for a long, healthy life.
